We had these beautiful custom kitchen cupboards in our house but, honestly, despite the fantastic craftsmanship I was so over their style and finish. I felt like the uber traditional cherry paneled cabinetry left our home in the 90s and I wanted some thing a bit more trendy and contemporary. Trashing those solid wood cabinets seemed like such a waste so we started looking into painting kitchen cabinets. Its actually a fairly easy and definitely more budget friendly option that can produce fantastic results. Before we painted them, we actually swapped out the kitchen cabinet doors for something a bit more modern and clean and even added a bit of decorative detailing on our existing range hood. A fresh coat of grey paint and a new marble backsplash completely transformed our kitchen and it is now my favorite room in our home.
There is no better way to revamp cheap kitchen cabinets on a budget than paint and/or refacing them. As you probably know, replacing these units are one of the most expensive remodeling projects you can do in a home, and one that takes a lot of time and effort. Kitchen cabinet refacing, on the other hand, is a fairly easy and budget friendly process that can save you a ton of time and money while completely transforming the look of your space. Before 2we started on this room, the cabinets were stark white and very early 2000s. The homeowner wanted something a bit more country rustic -- a look that could not be achieved with their existing cupboards. Rather than gut the kitchen, we replaced the kitchen cabinet doors and refaced the base. The project gave the room an entirely new look, but for a much more palatable price.
I absolutely love this awesome rustic cabin kitchen with natural stone walls, granite countertops, glazed wood cabinetry and impressive chefs appliances. This is exactly what I want in our home (but certainly don't have right now). Our kitchen base cabinets are actually a very similar style to the ones in these photos. If we swapped out the knobs and hardware then replaces our old laminate countertops with granite ones, I think we would get a very similar look. Since we already have similar kitchen cabinet doors as well, the main thing we would have to add is the large stone feature. I have read a lot about stone veneer panels that I think would give us a very similar look, but without the headache of hiring a contractor to hand lay a stone wall. With a couple of design tweaks I am pretty sure we can make our kitchen look just like this one.
We have been looking all over for very modern kitchen cabinet doors like these to replace our much more traditional existing ones. I live in a period home and we have actually been working to modernize the space quite significantly lately beginning primarily with our kitchen design. I know some people would shudder at the thought of bringing this style into a nineteenth century home, but we love the juxtaposition of classic architectural detailing alongside very sleek and edgy contemporary pieces. At first we thought we would simply swap out our existing units with some sort of design that has glass kitchen cabinet doors to give it a cleaner and more modern flare, but after looking at these photos I want to completely gut the space and replace it with units just like these.
I was so surprised by how much simply swapping out our knobs and handles would change the look of our kitchen cabinet doors. Before we add these beautiful bronze knobs we had that traditional brass variety that you see in a ton of 90s homes. The overall look was quite dated, especially the larger kitchen storage cabinets that create the transition between the living area and the kitchen. Rather than spending the money to completely redo the kitchen, we wanted to try out small changes that may upgrade it just enough to fool people into thinking we gutted the kitchen. I think that these small changes both in the knobs as well as light fixtures and faucets. Another big change was we added a lazy susan and some great organizational shelving to our corner kitchen cabinet that we use as the pantry. It is now my favorite part of the kitchen because it looks like one of those Instagram organization photos.
My neighbor told me about how they just had cabinet refacing done in their kitchen, and said that it completely changed the look of their home for a relatively small amount of money. I took some pictures of their space because I was so impressed with how it turned out. Before they started this project, their kitchen was actually very gloomy. The cabinets were finished in a very golden stained wood (similar to the color of their floors) and made the entire space seem really dated. The had considered getting all new units, but the cost was too high so they began looking into replacement cabinet doors. Again, even that was more than they wanted to spend, so they decided to just reface and paint them. Honestly, I would have never been able to tell their their gorgeous new bright white space had the same kitchen cabinet doors. I really want to look into doing this at our house now as well.
