Repainting kitchen cabinets is by far the best way to repurpose old units if you are on a budget or simply don't want to waste good cabinetry. We decided to paint the majority of ours a basic crisp white and then accent it with bright blue kitchen cabinets for the island. To be honest, I would have loved to paint the entire kitchen in that blue color, but I was afraid of doing something that bold just in case we decided to move in the future (even though we have no plans to now). We felt that white would be the best paint for kitchen cabinets in our home because the rest of the decor is pretty monochromatic and relies on natural accents like warm woods and luxe metals for bolder elements of style.
Countless people have told me that repainting kitchen cabinets is a complete game changer in terms of revamping your home on a extremely limited budget. In my opinion, even the best kitchen cabinets are going to go out of style, so I think that it is fantastic to have an alternative to replacing them every few years, ya know? As we are currently well in the midst of remodeling our home I have revisited the idea of repainting cabinets again in an attempt to help cut costs so that I can incorporate some more luxurious items that I have had my eye on (quartz countertops for one). These photos are what I am using as my inspiration design, and I actually think that it would be super easy to achieve by just painting our dark cabinets white.
I know a lot of people on here have talked about the benefits of repainting kitchen cabinets, but I am going to throw my two cents in as well and may start some disagreements in the process. While I do agree that painting kitchen cabinets is a very budget friendly way to transform the look of your kitchen, I think that a lot of homeowners attempt to do it themselves (or even inexperienced contractors) and it ends up looking worse than before. Sure you can create a good design with it, but if you are going to the trouble of spending money to alter your kitchen, I would spend a bit more and just redo it. We could have slapped some kitchen paint on the old cabinets of this house and called it a day, but we didn't think that the transformation would be enough. Spending the money on these new contemporary units was well worth it as I feel that they have changed the entire look and feel of the home to much more up to date.
Yes, repainting kitchen cabinets yourself can be quite a chore, but the result (and money savings) is so outstanding that it definitely makes it worth the headache. You would never believe it from these photos but, prior to painting cabinets white in here, this kitchen feature dark espresso units, deep stained floors and your typical beige and black granite countertops. We wanted to transforming the space into something airy and modern. We started by stripping and lyme washing the floors (another cheap way to revamp a space) then sanded and painted all of the cabinets. I knew that we wanted to install high end light fixtures and countertops so, in order to save room in the budget for that, we opted not to use the best brand of paint for kitchen cabinets (or at least what the folks at the paint store told us) and just your generic lower priced brand you can find at Lowe's. Despite skimping on high end paint, I actually thought that the cabinets turned out fantastic -- I have no idea how much better they would have looked with the fancy paint.
I love finding homeowners that are enthusiastic about repainting kitchen cabinets bold colors like this because it helps me to keep their designs at or under budget and prevents you from wasting perfectly good wood cabinets if you don't need to. This couple was so fun to work with because they are very earthy with a funky retro style about them, one that is perfectly personified by these fresh green kitchen cabinets. They have a huge garden out back and wanted to create a highly functional kitchen that would allow them to do major cooking projects like canning and dehydrating, but also entertain with friends and family for farm to table meals. Given that this room was going to be used heavily, I felt it would be best to invest in the best paint for cabinets (Benjamin Moore kitchen paint in my opinion) to ensure that it would look brand new for years to come despite heavy use.
I cannot emphasize enough how much of a money saver repainting kitchen cabinets was for us. I could be biased, but I would not think that by looking at these photos you would have any idea that, before painting kitchen cabinets white, all of the units were the same color as the center island. The paint that we chose covered the wood beautifully and totally transformed how the space looks. Not only is it much brighter and open looking, but I think it makes the home look much more updated than the date of the cabinets would suggest. I think that part of our success was all of the research we did on what kind of paint to use on kitchen cabinets to have the most professional look. Definitely don't skimp on price in this area, because the higher quality (and unfortunately price) the paint, the better final product you will have.
