Want to make your classic design stand out? Add in some small accent pieces, like I did with the darker pillows and coffee table here, to make the lighter hues in your pallet pop. Sometimes, the simplest colors are the best ones. For your next redesign, pick living room colors that inspire you and invite others to unwind in your home.

I recently redid this open floor plan home for a client who wanted to give their living room decor a facelift. Their living room has a beautiful vaulted ceiling with two skylights, offering plenty of natural light to show off the new decor I chose. Slate gray bookshelves now stand on either side of the fireplace, and I updated the rug and couches, sticking to a color scheme made up of shades of blue and gray. The client looked through several living room paint colors before deciding on a pale tan color that nicely sets off the rest of the room. Together, the client and I picked out a unique light fixture that serves as a centerpiece to the room and hung up some sketches of their hound dogs. Finally, I added two gray armchairs and a rich brown coffee table to tie all of the living room colors together.

Picking the right interior paint colors is an important part of planning any design, whether it is in a kitchen, living room or bedroom. Color is very transformative and also a key component of establishing your chosen style. Some shades scream traditional, while others are quite contemporary. If you are looking for living room color ideas that could easily be translated into other areas of the house to create a cohesive design, look no further than this lovely home. The pretty grey color has a subtle green undertone that coordinates beautifully with the dark plank flooring, crisp white trim, and bronze metal accents on the balcony. The shade rides the line between traditional and contemporary, making it an easy color to pair with a variety of decor styles. I like how they paired it with simple neutral sofas and accent furniture alongside a gorgous area rug that ties together all of the living room colors. The finished room looks complete and like something that you could find on the pages of Southern Living Magazine.

I have been trying to figure out what is the best color for living room walls at my rental properties because I need something that is neutral enough that will please a lot of tenants, but that is dark enough to hide nicks and imperfections on the walls. I am thinking that a grayish taupe shade like this one may be a good option. This shade stood out to me because, although it is quite deep, it still blends quite nicely with white sofas and colorful decor. Most living room paint ideas for rentals that I have season focus on a beige or white color palette but, in my experience, light walls look so grungy and dinged up after just 6 months. For this reason I am thinking that a dark shade like this will look updated and contemporary but will disguise a lot of wear and tear. Even better, this particular shade is from Benjamin Moore and I know that they offer several more durable formulas than some of the cheaper brands on the market. Over the years I have learned that some things are worth spending a little bit extra on to decrease maintence, and living room colors is definitely one of those.

I just moved into a tiny studio apartment downtown and I am on the hunt for small living room ideas that are chic yet practical. Unfortunately, a lot of my favorite inspiration pictures that I have come across feature gigantic rooms with cool (expensive) art and funky furniture pieces. It just does not seem practical for me to bring features like that to my space on a students budget and because I intend on moving in a few years. What is the point of finding all of these elaborate living room ideas and hardcore decorating if I am just going to be leaving again when I graduate. I actually really liked these photos from a small traditional (I assume) home. Everything is quite simple, there are minimal furniture pieces, and yet the space seems very polished and elegant. My current living room colors are a very similar white shade and I could easily pick up a few miniature neutral sofas at IKEA. I like how everything including paint, furniture and textiles, is very monochromatic except for a few pops of pink in the flower arrangement.

In my opinion, deciding on living room color schemes is a large commitment because you are essentially setting the tone for the rest of your home decor (aside from bedrooms of course). In todays age of open floor plans and large family gathering areas, home decor tends to flow through the main areas of the home as opposed to being quite disjointed and closed off as in previous decades. Kitchens often feature an adjoining dining area with a large space for couches and a television right next door. For this reason, your room color ideas must coordinate throughout all of these spaces in order to give that cohesive finished look. Take this stunning contemporary home for example. The beige and peach palette pervades through the living room colors, to the main foyer, and back into the kitchen and dining area. The use of the same unique colors throughout makes the entire space seems like one giant room and encourages traffic flow throughout all of the areas during gatherings.
