The living room is oftentimes one of the most frequently used rooms in the house. These large rooms serve multiple purposes including as an area to entertain, to watch television at the end of the night, to use as an office, and to catch up with friends and family just to name a few. For this reason, it is important that living room design is not only beautiful, but comfortable and functional as well. When you embark on a makeover project in one of these space, I always suggest mapping out what you plan to use the room for first, and then determine the average number of people that you expect to be in there.

The answers to these questions will determine the living room ideas you can use, theamount of seating you will need as well as what the traffic flow should be like. Generally, I incorporate one or two sofas (or a large sectional like in this space) and a couple of armchairs depending on the size of the family. If you plan to incorporate a television, one of the first things I plan is also where to install the mount. All of these factors determine your floor plan and the traffic flow of the space.

I just finished up this modern living room design for one of our favorite clients and think it turned out great. This home is always fun to work on because it has a great modern style, gorgeous outdoor space, and adventurous homeowners willing to take a risk on unconventional styles and funky new trends. This living room makeover was no different. Believe it or not, before we transformed the space with our room decor ideas, it had ugly 1970s carpet and an extremely large and outdated brick fireplace. The first thing we did was rip out the old carpet and replace it with this gorgeous lightly stained wood flooring. Second we tackled the large eye sore that was the fireplace. Our client gravitated towards living room ideas that incorporate a bold architectural focal point, so this is what we delivered in the final design. We refaced the old fireplace with this fun grey wood look tile, and added a long horizontal gas unit. The result is a cool futuristic piece that anchors the contemporary style we chose. Touches of grey in the textiles and art completed the look.

Lately clients have been asking me for my opinion on the hottest living room ideas 2022. I dont really think that much has changed as far as major stylistic elements. We are still seeing the grey and white decor schemes that have been so popular for the past few years. I have seen a lot of designers adding in bolder darker colored touches though, which I think jazzes up the look a bit. For example, I added pops of slate grey in the form of rustic exposed beams alongside more contemporary living room decor in this home. It coordinates nicely with the bronze accents on the coffee table and curtain rods. Another trend that I am seeing in living room ideas this year, is whitewashed wood furniture paired with very dark flooring. Again, I think the theme is contrasting colors as a means of bringing more design interest to the space. This technique worked very well in this design, as it blended the tones of the sofa with the curtains and furniture, then sharply contrasted the espresso floors.

In my opinion, the most beautiful living rooms that I have seen all share one important element the color blue! To me nothing could be better than a pop of indigo against plank flooring or a lovely sand colored sofa like in this stunning room. Blue is on of those colors that has been popular in living room decor ideas for years now due to its versatility. You can bring it in as a soft almost neutral shade, or use it to make a bold design statement through art or wall colors. Check out how my favorite shade of navy was utilized throughout this fantastic living room. We began with a neutral paint palette of white on white to blend nicely with the gorgeous plank flooring and plush beige area rug. The decor began to pop when we started adding elements of navy in the two-toned curtains, throw pillows, accent table, and decorative trinkets. The look is subtle yet powerful. These living room ideas would be quite simple to bring to your own home. Just start with a neutral base then bring in your blue accents through textiles and decorative accents.

Do It Yourself

My friends and family always ask me where I got the inspiration for our living room interior design. Everybody always says that it looks like I had a professional designer in to do it, but actually it was just me. Since everybody says I did a good job, I thought I would share some photos in case any of you are looking for living room ideas. This room is the area where my family gathers to spend time together every evening, so I knew that I wanted it to have a lot of comfortable seating to hold everybody. I chose a large white sectional for one side of the room and a traditional sofa with armchairs in a coordinating fabric for the opposite side. This gives us zones for adults and children if we want to separate a bit. In order to keep these two areas unified, I used the same throw pillows in both lounge areas. Doing this makes everything blend effortlessly. I accented the furniture with pieces of my antique collection and little trinkets I have collected over the years. I think it is the perfect blend of high end home decor living room and my own personality.

Modern living room ideas are some of my favorite to incorporate in our clients homes. I love clean lines, monochromatic palettes, and bold artwork. All of which are mainstays in contemporary decor. This home is one of my favorite projects that I have taken on lately. The entire house was done in the same color scheme and materials we pulled for the living room ideas. The ashy wood floor and all grey and white paint palette provide a simple and monochromatic base for the rest of the design, We chose a classic beige leather sofa with matching chrome accented side chairs to anchor the layout and blend well with our living room colors. Then I added funky accent furniture like these glass and chrome side tables and large metal light fixture. Once we nailed the foundation, I was able to have fun with color and pattern in the art work. I love how the bold primary shades of the canvas behind the sofa really pops against the plain grey walls. A single yellow throw pillow and a few potted plants bring in the rest of the color for the design.
