I am a sucker for well done contemporary bathrooms because the look ultra clean and fresh with the simple lines and (generally) monochromatic color palettes. If I am on the hunt for some new contemporary bathroom ideas, I will usually come on here and glance around the galleries for some fresh inspiration. This particular designs caught my eye today because of the bold statement shower set in the center of the design. As you can see, pretty much the entire space is done in very light white and grey tones, but then the walk in shower makes an eye catching statement with the deep charcoal marbled tiles. Normally I don't think that I would go for such a dark color for tile because it can be very polarizing, but I actually think that it accents the rest of the bathroom designs perfectly.
If I could take each of my favorite elements of all of the contemporary bathrooms that I have ever looked at and combine them into one space, it would certainly be this one. Whomever came up with this design pretty much took my entire board of bathroom ideas 2019 and combined them in such a gorgeous and cohesive way. I love marble (just like every other person on the planet it seems haha), but I also like it done in a way that is just a bit different and edgier than your typical traditional bathroom that you often see. The designer mixed and matched different sizes, shapes, and patterns of tile (all in the same material and shade range of course) to create a very intricate and unique look.
I am all for experimenting with contemporary bathrooms and keeping things edgy, but this design is a bit much even for me. Just like so many other designers, I believe that bathroom designs for small spaces should be pretty simplistic when it comes to pattern and color scheme because you can overwhelm these spaces quite easily. While I love the idea of this wood grain tile, I think that covering all of the walls and the shower in the same tile in such a small area was a mistake. It quickly overwhelmed the tiny area and makes you feel as though the walls are closing in on you. You could certainly use this tile in simple bathroom designs, just concentrate it to the shower wall rather than the entire room.
I think that contemporary bathrooms have a place in any home no matter the existing architectural style or decor. Most people feel that you need to stick with one decor theme or trend, but that is certainly not the case -- you can certainly mix and match different styles and ideas to give your home more personality. This contemporary bathroom design is actually housed in a more traditional colonial style home with a lot of crown molding and paneling. We thought it would be a fun twist to bring a bit more of a "Restoration Hardware" type style to the guest bathroom rather something more tame and expected. Rather than using your typical white small bathroom ideas, we installed a wood grain tile walk in shower and this fun ebony vanity.
Oftentimes when I suggest trying out some ideas from contemporary bathrooms like this to clients, some are a bit fearful that the style will be too cold and aloof for them. I am not sure why modern bathroom ideas get the the reputation of being devoid of personality or warmth, because I think that these designs can be just as elegant as any other style (whether that be traditional, rustic etc). The key to achieving the right balance, is picking a color palette that gives depth to the space. Not only that, but it is essential to add in those fun accents like the wallpaper in these bathroom pictures, that makes the design fun and unique.
I am always so intrigued by the thought and artistry that goes into designing contemporary bathrooms. I could be totally naive and wrong, but in my opinion it seems far more challenging to conceptualize a stunning new gray and white modern bathroom than it is to develop a design of the same color palette for a traditional space. Of course this could be because I am far more well versed in more classic and timeless styles rather than the cutting edge and trendy looks that often come with modern decor. I would have never thought to create an oval room to house only the gorgeous free standing tub. Then pairing it with the sleek acrylic black vanity and vessel sinks makes for such a cool futuristic design.
