I have been watching home and garden television kitchen renovation shows for years because I love how different a home can look after the 30 minutes of the show. The designers always inspire me with their outstanding kitchen makeovers that completely transform the look of a space. Now that we have bought a fixer upper, I have been able to put all of that television I watched to good use. This is the after photo of our new kitchen that I designed myself (I wont show you the before because it was really bad). I wanted to incorporate the white panelled kitchen cabinet ideas that I see most frequently in the magazines. This style gives a very traditional look but with an updated and modern spin to it. I also knew that I wanted to have an island in my new design. We love cooking and entertaining so we felt this was an essential feature, not only for looks, but for functionality as well. I mimicked the slightly exclectic kitchen cabinet ideas that mismatch color schemes for the units. The brown we chose for the island contrasts well with the white cabinetry, giving the space a bit of visual interest.
I love watching kitchen makeovers unfold on my favorite television shows. I was thrilled when it was time to do the same in my own home. We recently built this house from the ground up in a very contemporary style. The wood floors and grey color palette you see in these photos are carried throughout the rest of the home as well. I prefer when all of the rooms in a house match at least to a certain point. I dont like mismatched flooring, wall paint and overall color schemes. This came into play when I was picking out our kitchen makeover ideas. I knew I wanted to keep everything monochromatic and white. I also didnt want traditional panelled cabinetry like you see in so many home decor magazines today. For this reason, we installed these super modern shiny cabinets with coordinating white solid surface kitchen countertops. The only other color or material we brought in was the gunmetal grey of all of the stainless steel appliances and chrome handles. Even our light fixture was extremely minimalistic and modern.
Something as simple as a kitchen cabinet makeover can completely transform the look of a home. You can go from traditional to strikingly modern by merely switching out cupboards or even just cabinet doors. Our client wanted to upgrade the space to a more contemporary feel and completely overhaul the color scheme. Kitchen makeovers like this are fun because the remarkable change is so rewarding. This small kitchen remodel shows exactly what I am talking about. Before the transformation, the space had a very traditional style. The cabinetry matched the built in bookcase units in the adjoining living room. To give that modern vibe they were wanting, we replace the existing units with the sleek contemporary oak cabinets. Bold stainless steel hardware and a black granite countertop complete the style metamorphosis. Even better, the lighter coloring of the cabinets and clean lines of the design make the square footage of this small kitchen remodel seem larger than before.
Small kitchen makeovers can make a huge difference in the overall look of your home or condo, especially when you have an open concept floor plan like this one. If you dont do a lot of cooking or if you have relatively limited square footage, a small corner kitchen tucked away beside your living area could be a great option. The monochromatic all white color scheme of this open concept condo keeps the small space looking open and bright, giving the illusion of more space than there really is. Plus, the multipurpose kitchen island on casters can be moved in and out of the space to create a more larger floorplan for entertaining or brought back in for extra prep room. If you are looking into open concept kitchen makeovers like this for your home, be sure to keep your cabinetry, countertops and appliances simple and streamlined in order to not clash with the other decor in the living areas. It is best to keep the kitchen very neutral so as not to draw much attention to it or the mess that can sometimes be housed there.
New kitchen cabinets can make such a huge difference to the look of your space. Even something as simple as going from dark cabinetry to light cabinetry can completely transform the style of your home. In this kitchen remodel, our clients wanted to transition from a verymodern look to a more traditional feel, while still blending with the rest of their contemporary styled home. The cabinet style we selected was the perfect choice to achieve this. The doors and trim incorporate shaker panelling and crown molding to give that classic feel, but the sleek lines blend well with the rest of their decor. Rather than choosing a stark white finish we went with a muted grey tone to, again, be in line with a more traditional look but in keeping with their other contemporary items. As with all kitchen makeovers, the finishing touch was these gorgeous granite countertops and eye catching light fixture. Details like that can really make or break a design. As you can see, simply adding new kitchen cabinets instantly upgraded the space.
Kitchen makeovers are some of my favorite jobs because they are such a central part of the home. As such, they have a major design impact on the entire house. Homeowners are often scared of these projects because of the magnitude and the cost. I am here to tell you that you can still incorporate todays hottest kitchen ideas on any budget. All it takes is some careful planning and ingenuity. Cabinets are the one item that tends to be the most pricey when doing a complete kitchen remodel. It is also one of the easiest areas to cut costs. There are tons of cheap kitchen cabinets available that look surprisingly high quality. I would avoid those that are sold at local home improvement stores because they tend to be poorly made. Instead look at online retailers that allow homeowners to design their kitchen, then order the pieces and install themselves. This is such a money saver, and the finished product looks so high end. We used one of those companys for this remodel and we were so impressed with the result.
