Small bathroom renovations are one of the most challenging you may face as a homeowner, but the end results can be highly rewarding, and a great way to add value to your home. Small bathroom designs are actually one of my favorite projects to work on because you can really let your creativity shine. Sometimes it is just too easy to do those huge master suites or jack and Jill baths, I think it is actually much more rewarding to wrack your brain trying to come up with creative small bathroom ideas to best utilize the space you are given. This particular bathroom is by far my favorite design project that I have ever done. The stunning white swirling tile created such an awesome abstract look that is edgy yet feminine at the same time. Small bathroom remodel ideas are essentially no different than any other makeover project for a standard size room, you just need to make a few adjustments in scale and coloring here and there to accommodate the smaller layout. For example, in this gorgeous marble covered bathroom, we wanted to bring in all of the latest trends including corerra subway tile, a grey bathroom vanity, and bronze fixtures, Just in miniature size. As with all bathroom designs for small spaces, we just needed to think creatively in order to fit everything, this included a frameless shower and a simple color palette of all grey and white to keep it feeling open.

Whether you are planning out large or small bathroom designs, I always teach my new interior decorators to think big and think detailed. What I mean by this is that you should first collect or write down all of your key bathroom ideas (the ones you don't want to leave out) from the biggest to the smallest detail. This ensures that you capture everything up front so there are no surprises in the end that can lead to a less than cohesive look. The one mistake I made in this particular small bathroom remodel, is not taking into account the shade of glass on the existing shower door that we had always planned to reuse. The slightly greenish tint ruins the streamlined all beige color palette that we were going for and could have been avoided by more careful planning and consideration.

Many of my colleagues are too afraid or straight-laced to experiment with bold style in small bathroom designs. In design school we are all taught the key principles of successful small bathroom decorating ideas (and I am sure most homeowners know them as well). Everybody says to keep pattern at a minimum, avoid bold dark colors that could make the space feel smaller than it is, and keep all heavy patterns near the floor so as not to enclose the space. Well I threw all of these concepts out the window when I designed this awesome eclectic bathroom remodel featuring bold green and brown patterns, vibrant tile placed at the top half of the room, and miss matched artwork. Although this space does not follow the "rules," I think it is an incredibly beautiful and memorable look.

I feel like so many homeowners are under the impression that small bathroom designs have to be drab monochromatic spaces with little pattern and no dark colors. While it is a good idea to keep things in lighter shades and simple cohesive decor in order to make the space feel open, you can still have fun with things like bathroom tile ideas or a funky vanity. This small bathroom redo that I just completed is a great example of how you can add touches of more vibrant pieces without crowding the space. Rather than try to bring a lot of decor via small bathroom designs with shower tile that stands out, I kept that area very neutral but added a run black, grey and white retro-style pattern on the floor. It is just enough to keep things interesting without being too much.
